Night One of Clay Cup to Crum, Holloway, Conley & Hadlock

Night One of Clay Cup to Crum, Holloway, Conley & Hadlock

7/16/20

Night number one of the 2020 Clay Cup Nationals presented by IBEW/NECA saw winners come from all different starting spots in the main to claim the prelim night 1 wins. Chance Crum came from sixth to win in the Speedmart 600 Open division, while Clennon Holloway started ninth in the Shots 2 Go Espresso 1200 class. Tyler Conley won from the pole in the Mytrafficman.NET 600 Restricted division while Drake Hadlock passed his way from 18th to grab the victory in the Clean Crawls Junior Sprints.

Austin Woods led the first three laps of the Speedmart 600 Open main event before Tanner Holm used the high groove to pass him in turn two on lap four. Setting sail on the field, Holm held a solid advantage until a yellow bunched the field up around lap 10. Chance took the opportunity with Holm now close at hand to throw a huge slider on him in turns three and four to take the top spot on lap 12. Crum would go on to lead the rest of the way unchallenged, with Holm scoring second and defending Clay Cup champion Jared Peterson moving from 15th to 3rd.

The race of the night was in the Shots 2 Go Espresso 1200 class, as Clennon Holloway outdueled Dakota Drake in a shootout at the end. Brent Sexton led the first 11 laps before Alex Lewis took the lead from him, bringing Drake and Holloway hot on his heels. Lewis held off the hard charging pair till lap 19 when Drake rocketed around the high side and into the lead. Holloway kept digging on the bottom of the track, moving into second and running down Drake to take the lead on lap 23. Drake didn’t relent, rallying hard on the high to retake the lead on lap 24, but Holloway was the picture of precision on the final lap, hitting his marks spot on as he retook the lead down the back straight and went on for the victory. Drake settled for runner up, with Chance Crum coming from 16th to finish 3rd.

The Mytrafficman.NET 600 Restricted main event saw Tyler Conley go wire to wire for his first victory in the division. Jayden Whitney came from tenth and pressured Conley over the final few laps, but Conley held strong on the bottom to fend off Whitney for the win. Peyton Drake rounded out the podium.

In a main event plagued with stoppages, Drake Hadlock made a last lap pass to win his second feature of the year in the Clean Crawls Junior Sprints and in the process, almost assuredly locked himself in as top point for the weekend in the division. Hadlock came from 18th to pass Ryan Bright on the last lap to take the win. The second place for Bright was his best Deming Speedway finish, with Cooper Anderson taking third.
