Salmon, Lemley, Barnes & Van Sickle Win at Clay Cup Night 2

7/17/20

Everson, WA – The second night of the 2020 Clay Cup Nationals presented by IBEW/NECA was highlighted by Raio Salmon winning in a shootout in the 600 Open division A Main. Brock Lemley, Isabel Barnes and Kane Van Sickle were the other division winners.

The highlight of the night was the battle up front in the Speedmart 600 Open division. Parker Hadlock led laps 1-5 while blasting through the cushion up on the top of the raceway, while Raio Salmon maneuvered her car deftly around the low groove, keeping him within a half car length at all times. Salmon picked up the lead on lap six, but Hadlock stayed the close, retaking the top spot two times on lap 15 and lap 17 – neither pass counted though, as both were negated for caution flags. On a lap 18 restart, Hadlock made a big run on Salmon, driving  hard off the top of turn two to try and dive under Raio entering turn three. Raio made the move to slam the door shut and in the process, incidental contact occurred between the two cars. Salmon managed to drive away while Hadlock had to retire with front end damage. On the restart, Salmon took on a new challenger in the form of defending Clay Cup champion Jared Peterson, as Peterson attempted to rocket around the outside of Raio. Salmon held steady, hitting her marks on every remaining lap and scoring the win over Peterson and third place Jordi Meese. As of this writing, the unofficial front row for the 2020 Clay Cup main event will be Jared Peterson and Chance Crum.

After fighting gremlins all weekend long, Brock Lemley put it all together for a wire to wire win in the Shots 2 Go Espresso 1200 class. FInally finding the electrical bug that plagued him, Lemley led every lap from the pole with Seth Hespe putting together a solid run for second and Dakota Albright finishing third.

Isabel Barnes put together 25 perfect laps in taking her first Deming Speedway win in the Mytrafficman.NET 600 Restricted division. Mattix Salmon ran behind Barnes just a few lengths back for most of the main in taking second place, while Levi Kuntz ran a strong third.

The Clean Crawls JR Sprints had a format change for Friday night, as instead of the normal full invert field, the field lined straight up by points. Kane Van Sickle took full advantage of this change, and from his pole position starting spot, led every lap of the main event. Drake Hadlock and Lucas Maudlin were second and third. With the format change, officials decided that the Saturday night A Main would be lined up by combined points rather than the traditional either/or format, which will make a front row of Hadlock and Van Sickle for the A Main.
