Drake Wins 1st Main of ‘08

7/4/08

Deming, WA – The fireworks were all on the racetrack on Hawley’s Auto Supply night at Deming Speedway. Eric Drake won his first main event of the year in the Lifestyles RV 1200 division in thrilling fashion. Working his way through lapped traffic, Drake held the point from the outgo when a lap 20 red flag bunched up the field with Cody Anderlini (he of the 11 consecutive fast time awards) and Derek Holmwood right on his tail. With a loose racecar AND running out of fuel, Drake managed to hold off the two hard chargers behind him to bring home the big trophy on the birthday of our great nation. Holmwood nipped Anderlini at the line to secure second.

Former Clay Cup champion Kyle Johnson has his race program ramped up at the right time of the year. Johnson led wire to wire to score another main event victory in the Frontier Chevrolet / Speedmart 600’s. It wasn’t easy for Kyle, as the very fast Austin Wheatley challenged him repeatedly during the first 15 laps of the feature. After a yellow flag, Wheatley’s position was usurped by Colton Heath who gave Johnson a run over the final 10 frames. Johnson held strong on the high groove to finish first, followed by Heath and Wheatley.

The PMP 600 Restricted class were given a night off from points racing to prepare for the Clay Cup Nationals. With the restrictors out, it was Dougie James hard on the hammer, winning his third main of the year by a large margin. Second place went to Angie Magnussen, third to Garrett Johnson.

The Advanced Sprint Car & Toys for Trucks 250’s have been highly competitive all year long and Independence Day was no exception. Shawn Holtorf took the lead from roommate Spud Allen on the 6th lap, then held off Brandon Turner, Eric Turner, Jake Benson and Allen over the next 11 circuits to visit victory lane again. Eric Turner battled through the other competitors to finish second. Allen recovered from a mid race stoppage, working his way back from the rear of the field to finish third.

Reese Wickard led all 15 laps of the Kasey Kahne Junior Sprint main event to secure his first career victory at Deming Speedway. Wickard was challenged a few times by Josh Lemley who finished a career high second place. Lemley held off third place finisher Kale Woodske and Skyler Pawlowicz to secure his spot.

Friday the 11th of July is the National Reservation Bureau night at Deming Speedway. During the night we will give away a trip for two to Las Vegas courtesy the National Reservation Bureau and VB racing. Following the mid season championship races, we will light up the night sky with the Hawley’s Auto Supply Fireworks Spectacular.
